Harrington wins Open in style

Ireland's golf hero Padraig Harrington has joined an elite band of sportsmen by winning the Open Championship two years in a row, and in style.

The Dubliner battled through the pain barrier, and some of the toughest weather conditions the Open has seen, to lift the Claret Jug at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club, Southport..

Harrington's wife, Caroline, and their young sons, Ciaran and Patrick, looked on from the edge of the 18th green as he putted for glory and his second major win.

It puts him in an illustrious band of 15 other golfers who have successfully retained the Open title through its 148 year history.

"I'm going to hold on to this," he quipped. "I don't know how long I can keep this up, but back to back, I'm thrilled."

Irish President Mary McAleese and Taoiseach Brian Cowen sent messages of congratulations to Harrington. The Taoiseach said: "We are all very proud of Padraig and hope that he enjoys this success."

The President said: "The whole country is hugely proud of Padraig's success and the manner in which he achieved it. Once again, he has combined tremendous natural talent with hard work, dedication and resilience. He is indeed a true champion."

In the lead, but under pressure and with two holes to play, Harrington secured his place in history with style and confidence. He put himself in contention with three solid rounds after teeing off with an injured wrist last Thursday.

Harrington's success was virtually guaranteed after he hit an approach shot 272 yards to within six feet of the 17th hole. Later he said he knew he had won after a clean drive down the 18th fairway.

The win guarantees him a Ryder Cup place for the challenge competition between Europe and America in the US in September.
