RESIDENTS are encouraged to have their say on the future of a play park.

Plans are underway to refurbish Belmont Road Play Area, with the promise of new and more inclusive equipment.

As part of this project, Northwich Town Council has launched an online consultation to make sure the changes reflect what is wanted by residents.

“Northwich Town Council is looking to refurbish Belmont Road Play Area, we want to ensure that what we install is what you the residents wish to see on the site,” reads the consultation form.

“The equipment we want to install will need to be robust but still offer exceptional play value and be inclusive.

“This consultation will give us an idea of what you want to see so we can come up with a design for the play space.

“Once the design is drawn up we will once again consult with you to ensure you are happy with the final design.”

The consultation comes following concerns raised about the deteriorating state of the play area.

Olly Southgate, who visits the park most weekends with his daughter, says they have found shards of broken glass and condom wrappers near the play equipment, some of which is broken or missing entirely.

Speaking in February, Olly said: “It’s just become an eyesore and it's not even functional anymore, there’s just nothing there.

“I think the local community are just resigned to the fact that it’s a no-go area.

“I haven’t seen another child there for a long time.”

Northwich Town Council responded, stating that they took over the lease of six play areas from Cheshire West and Chester in 2019.

All five of the other sites have since been refurbished, having been in a 'worse condition'.

But it seems it is finally time for Belmont Road to get some much-needed TLC.

The online consultation launched this week allows residents to vote for which equipment they would like to see installed.

Options include climbing frames, obstacles, seesaws, swings, and trampolines.

There is also inclusive options such as specially-designed swings, roundabouts and picnic tables.

Once the consultation is complete, the town council will apply for funding with the aim of starting work in the autumn.
