Gwyneth’s daughter aims to be next Crewe and Nantwich MP

GWYNETH Dunwoody's daughter, Tamsin, has been chosen by the Labour Party as its candidate to be Crewe and Nantwich's next MP.

She will now fight the May 22 by-election to try and take the seat her mother held for the last 34 years.

An intensive two-day selection process ended with Tamsin Dunwoody being chosen by the local Labour group at Pebble Brook School tonight.

About 60 applications were made for the candidacy and they were then narrowed down to a manageable shortlist of five with Tamsin Dunwoody emerging as a comfortable winner.

Born in Devon, Ms Dunwoody, aged 49, was educated at the Grey Coat Hospital and the University of Kent.

She served as a Labour member of the National Assembly for Wales representing the constituency of Preseli Pembrokeshire from May 2003.

In October 2005 she was appointed Deputy Minister for Environment, Planning and Countryside and Deputy Minister for Economic Development and Transport in the Welsh Assembly Government.

She trained in the National Health Service and worked in London hospitals for nearly 15 years.

She has also been an adviser to small businesses in west Wales.

Also contesting the by-election will be Edward Timpson (Conservative), Elizabeth Shenton (Liberal Democrat) and Mike Nattrass (United Kingdom Independence Party).

Tamsin Dunwoody is Labour candidate.
I am disgusted.
Family and party cynicism and collusion in expediting the selection and election process before the funeral.
Parachuting in a dynastic candiate with no connection to the area.
If the Tories did it they would be vilified.
This represents everyting that the Labour Party is supposed to be against.

What an absurd comment by Mark. She is highly experienced candidate who will be her own person and stand for Labour's finest traditions.

I was present at tonight's selection meeting, and I can assure mark that Tamsin was chosen entirely on merit.

While the other candidates displayed a wealth of experience, passion and drive, Tamsin was consistently ahead.

It's time to decide how this by election is going to be run - I propose an entirely radical solution - everyone looks at the facts and listens to the arguments of each candidate and decide which one would best represent their direct and immediate concerns.

When you come to vote, democracy only works when you choose the candidate that you think can get the job done for you.

What do you think?

Jeff
She is a failed Welsh assembly politician.
If her name had been anything other than Dunwoody she would not have had a chance. I do not see how that represents Labour's finest traditions.
With respect, I do not accept that any of that is absurd. It is fair comment.

I don't care who they select, I've had enough of tax and speand Labour.

My income Tax has gone up, so has my council tax, my bills have rocketed and my wages have stayed static.

The last 12 months have been a disater for this country - we need change.
Posted by: Parasite on 10:18am Sun 4 May 08
Labour's carpet-bagger, shipped in from Pembroke where she was rejected. Not even the respect for her own mother to wait until she's in the ground before going on the stump. Shameful.
Posted by: Geoff, Shavington on 10:25am Sun 4 May 08
SJ how do you think she got on to the short list in the first place ? This is a cynical stunt and an insult to the intelligence of the electorate. What has happened to Labour when your surname counts for so much? I feel totally let down by this selection and will not be voting for Ms. Dunwoody-Kneafsey.

I am sick of this government - they've betrayed me and millions of other poor pensioners round England.

How they can tax my pension more just so they can fund a tax cut for the rich is beyond me - I'll NEVER vote labour again.

So - we are going to get a woman born in Devon, Educated in Kent and having represented Wales.

So much for someone who understands the problems in Crewe.

What a disgrace! - if the Tories had done this we would be screaming abuse at them. How can the Labour Party possibly complain about the inequality of a hereditary Monarchy and then effectively establish the same rules for this 'fig leaf' of a selection procedure. Shame on you, C&N Labour Party, shame on you...
Posted by: stephen, crewe on 11:30am Sun 4 May 08
Oh dear, Labour have got confused between their 'local connections' and the 'hereditary principle.'
Posted by: Adam, Cheshire on 12:07pm Sun 4 May 08
The best person for Crewe would be omeone who understands the are. Edward, the Tory candidate would be best for this. He's from the area, and works in the area. He is also a co-ordinator in neighbouring Eddisbury. He has worked for his selection, and has so much to give, unlike Tamsin who has had her chance to shine in Politics (in Wales) but failed. The labour party are in a mess at the moment, and because of this they feel the only way they will win the by-election is if they parachute Tamsin in to get a sympathy vote. RIP Gwyneth.

Unbelievable! Another synical ploy by the Labour Party. No wonder "the family" were keen for a quick by-election, they wanted another family member to get the job. I suggest we vote for a local man, Edward, who knows our issues, not a southern candidate imported by a desperate government because of her "name".
Posted by: John - Fuming of Crewe, Crewe on 5:53pm Sun 4 May 08
Yet again the Labour Party treat us with contempt! Gwyneth Dunwoody did not live in Crewe and therefore did not experience the daily problems encountered by residents. It would appear they now wish to impose her daughter who would no doubt adopt a similar stance. I have also just been telephoned by the 'Local Labour Party' but the call was made from a North East (Tyneside) number by a lady with a Geordie accent - how local is that??? This should no longer be tolerated and we have an opportunity to send this message to Gordon Brown on 22 May.
Posted by: Paul, Crewe on 6:37pm Sun 4 May 08
I totally agree with the majority of the earlier comments. This decision is a total disgrace! Are we now to be known as 'Crewe-ba', when family members can just take over as they wish!!! Oh, I forgot, Gordon Brown ran a mile when it appeared he would get a hammering in a General Election so he stays as our unelected leader! I guess Thursday proved that he is, at least, correct about some things!

As much as I admired Gwyneth Dunwoody, I really do hope that Tamsin Dunwoody is beaten into third place, if only for the sake of democracy. I'm sure Gwyneth loved her daughter but I can't help feeling that she would have not been in favour of this selection.

It is totally cynical as others have said & shows that the Labour Party are really scared about losing this seat. I would imagine it is better to lose with dignity than win by this method but, hey, I am only a member of the moral majority! If Tamsin wins, the people of C&N will all be a laughing stock in parliament!
Posted by: Disillusioned, nowhere near Crewe on 6:42pm Sun 4 May 08
Could Tamsin find Crewe on a map? Ever actually been there?
When my mother died and we were arranging her funeral, I wasn't in a fit state to run a bath, let alone try and stand for Parliament in HER SEAT. How can Tamsin do such a thing when her mother hasn't even been buried yet - she must have been plotting from the moment Gwyneth breathed her last. I thought Labour didn't believe in the hereditary principle......
Posted by: James Dey, Crewe on 7:49pm Sun 4 May 08
I've given up on Labour. At least the Tories are honest in toadying up to big business. Labour's nepotism is legendary. Isn't Mandelson the grandson of Herbert Morrison and the Milliband twins parents were also famous socialists

Thanks for your selection.
Odds on a Tory win.

They should have selected Gary Elsby a
Stoke lad as the best Labour candidate.

I love this false rage from the Tories who are obviously rattled.

First of all they complain that the timing of the by-election is disrespectful, despite the family being happy with it. Now, they are trying to claim that Tamsin Dunwoody is someone who is callous.

She was a superb AM for Preseli. Those who say she was rejected, could say the same of her mother who lost Exeter in 1970. Those who say she has no connection with the area could have said the same about her mother in 1974. Yet any but the most mealy mouthed cannot deny that Gwyneth Dunwoody was an excellent constituency MP. That's why in 1983 Crewe & Nantwich was the only Labour Gain in the NW outside of Liverpool.
Posted by: Chris Paul, Manchester on 11:55pm Sun 4 May 08
Gear, hear Steve Tunnicliffe. Could the Crewe and Nantwich Guardian please examine the IP addresses of the above slew of commentary and having found a pattern of false identities posted from various Tory offices run an expose on all these impersonations?

The Tories were caught doing this sort of thing in the Ealing Southall by-election even impersonating a Lib Dem councillor from Manchester (who is now a Labour member) and having him direct Lib Dem supporters to back the Tory.

As if. That sort of stuff was tracked back to a Tory fellow called Grant Shapps who then pretended his account had been hacked and that although he was an "IT Security expert" his password was 1234. As if.

Go on Guardian - check who has sent these messages and find yourself an exclusive story.

I find it hard to believe that Crewe & Nantwich cannot produce a local candidate... or more to the point, the Labour Party doesn't believe (or trust) they can, and so therefore need to implant a 'worthy' outsider to save the seat.

Of course this choice is designed to benefit the party and NOT the people of C&N... shame on them, shame on the shambles that passes for a once great and decent political party.

I know the people of C&N well and I know how proud and genuine they are too... they will hate the idea of their constituency being stolen by the faceless Labour party apparatchiks from London. I'm so sorry that they are having this embarrassment forced upon them, I really am.

Labour booted out the Hereditary Peers, seems they're all in favour of Hereditary M.Ps.

Just like Hilary Benn, son of Tony and over 100 MPs admit that they pay taxpayers money to employ family members, without advertising these vacancies fairly and openly to find the best candidate. Very cosy isn't it.

I cannot believe the torrent of disgust I am reading in some of the comments above! Firstly, I know for a fact that Ms. Dunwoody is not a 'failed' politician, she lost a very hard fought campaign in the notoriously Tory constituency neighbouring mine in the Assembly elections. Secondly, do you think the Labour party would be stupid enough to select a candidate on hereditary merit alone at such a terrible time for it?! I wish her best of luck, and am confident she will endeavour for the best interests of the people of Crewe & Nantwich.
Posted by: doog, crewe on 6:27pm Mon 5 May 08
I've voted Labour all my working life but with great regret I can no longer do so. They are no longer the party of the working class and have no regard whatsoever for the people. this is shown by selecting a candidate who no-one in Crewe has heard of,purely riding in on her mothers name. She knows nothing of the people or problems of Crewe. The only chance we get of having any say in her selection is when the vote takes place and I am very much afraid it will be a resounding NO from the people of Crewe and Nantwich

W.H.R said: "do you think the Labour party would be stupid enough to select a candidate on hereditary merit alone at such a terrible time for it?"

Frankly yes. The Labour Party are indeed stupid enough to select an hereditary candidate at this terrible time. And it seems that is exactly what they have done... did you not read the C&N Guardian story?

I am stunned that everybody seems so surprised at the electioneering machinations of the Labour Party. Gordon Brown is probably the worst post war prime minister we have suffered and he will do anything to cling on to power. Having lived in Crewe all my life (in Bristol at university) I have seen how Labour and Dunwoody have shown no interest in the lives of the working class. Instead they ship in some has been AM judged purely on name. Crewe and Nantwich need somebody with the local knowledge and interest to tackle what local people worry about: money in their pocket, crime, jobs, somewhere safe and clean for their children to grow up. Crewe (and the country) needs a change.

If it happened where I live and any party parachuted in a relative of a recently deceased MP , I would not vote for them. Period.

Basically it's saying the electorate are so thick they'lll vote for a name irrepsective of how good or bad the candidate.

As for Chris Paul above complaining of Conservative dirty tricks, just goes to prove the Labour Party is NOT listening despite their promises.

Just watched Moyra (AKA Tamsin) Dunwoody-Kneafsey on the BBC's Northwest Tonight. When asked if she'd vote against 42 day detention, she replied that she wasn't happy about it but would consider a response at a later time... "after I'm elected" she added.

Yes darling, of course you will. And no doubt you'll dutifully fall into line with the will of your political masters rather than those of the people of Crewe and Nantwich.

Is it right that the Labout shortlist was:
1. Tamsin Dunwoody?
2. Tamsin Dunwoody-Kneafsy?
3. Moyra Tamsin Dunwoody-Kneafsy?
4. Moyra Dunwoody?
5. Moyra Kneafsy?

Tamsin Dunwoody. Not good enough for Wales, so not good enough for Crewe & Natwich.

Tamsin will be appearing in central Nantwich on Monday morning at 10am. I for one will try to meet her and find out what sort of a person she is. I'm going to try to meet all the candidates and then make a judgement as to who will be best for the constituency. I certainly won't be thinking about sending a message to Gordon Brown.

I feel I must respond to the comments from Chris Paul & Steve Tunnicliffe (incidentally, neither of whom live around here!). First of all, both seem to feel that myself & the other writers are 'Tories' or part of some covert plot! Well, just speaking for myself, I am actually a lapsed Labour Party member (no, I have not joined ANY other political party), with many friends & family who still vote Labour. In fact, one of them is still a serving Labour councillor!!!

What I will admit to is that I have those things that are known as 'a mind of my own' & a sense of right & wrong. As for examining the e-mail addresses of all correspondents, Chris reveals himself to be an ideal companion to the same party that continues to erode civil liberties more than any past government of any political persuasion. From what I have read about Tamsin Dunwoody's comments about this debate, it seems she is hardly 'a chip off the old block' with an independent & moral outlook!

Most people, including myself, admired, respected & indeed voted for Gwyneth Dunwoody but what has transpired since her sad passing is just plain wrong. It surely says something that Miss Great Britain has more dignity than the local Labour selection committee (and whose candidate has the same connection to the area, ie none!).

As a side issue, Steve says that 'the Tories are rattled'. Hmmm, maybe we all dreamt Boris Johnson becoming London Mayor, Labour being beaten into third place nationally & locally, the results of the West & East Cheshire elections, etc, etc. I think his post has an obvious typo!!!
Posted by: Adam, Cheshire on 12:33pm Sun 11 May 08
The Tories rattled???

Best local election results since the late sixties, highest opinion poll ratings in over 20 years, Winning the Mayor of London race, a local ICM poll conducted in Crewe predicting a 1,000 majority to the Tories... Hmmm the only thing that seems to be rattled from this is a Labour supporter trying to play devils advocate!

New Labour is growing rather old, we need a change. David Cameron has turned the Conservatives into an effective, respectable party fit for government. He doesn't make promises like Labour, he talks about action what he and his party aims to achieve...

Timpson is the only front runner who is local, he knows the area, understands the concerns - contrast this to Tamsin - not from the area, drafted in at the last minute to hopefully gain the seat purely on the name. Vote Locally, Vote Timpson!

I think that it shameful that C & N labour party have not chosen a local candidate we have enough good strong local people who have served us well on the local council and in other capacities. Is Mrs Dunwoody-Kneafsy going to live in Crewe or be a commuter and increase her oh so generous allowances from us th e taxpayer.

I have been a life time labour party member but surely there must be more LOCAL people and grass root members
Posted by: Adam, Cheshire on 2:20pm Mon 12 May 08
Rather comical to see D Dunwoody criticise the spelling of names... Does it really matter? No! What does matter is getting C & N a decent, local MP who knows the area and the concerns of the constituents...
Posted by: Mark Chadwick, Crewe on 1:16pm Tue 13 May 08
Nobody noticed that the Liberal Democrats have done the same thing with Elisabeth Shenton, dropping the previous candidate like a hot brick immediately after the announcement of Gwenneth Dunwoody's death? Parachuted in a West Midlands councillor from Newcastle!
Incidentally, why isn't Tamsin standing under the name Dunwoody-Kneavsey, which she used previously?
Posted by: Dick Smith, Cardiganshire on 7:18pm Fri 16 May 08
Having read so much rubbish about Tamsin, I feel forced to respond.

Though not welsh I've taken a strong interest in the Welsh Assembly proceedings and especially in its elected Members.

I can assure the electorate of Crewe & Nantwich that this lady (far from being a failure)is simply "out of the top drawer". She has an excellent brain and is no push over.

It was no surprise to find she rose rapidly to Ministerial level.
