Don't forget what the little red envelope is for!

BEFORE the parliamentary by-election on May 22, many windows will display posters in party colours. But there will be some posters in which all the colours are included. Lots of pieces of paper will come into our letterboxes, but many houses will also receive a familiar red collection envelope. Armies of canvassers will appear on our streets, identified by coloured rosettes. But many houses will also be visited by members of local churches, each identified by a simple white rectangular badge.

May 11 is the start of Christian Aid Week, and the largest national house to house charity collection. Crewe Christian Aid Committee hopes that Guardian readers will respond with the generosity shown in previous years. If you are not at home when the Christian Aid collector calls - or you cannot face the possibility of yet another canvasser - there are alternative ways to give. Each envelope shows a Freepost address to which donations can be sent. You may also leave envelopes at the Access Shop in Earle Street or the HSBC bank in Market Street, Crewe. Christian Aid Week ends on May 17. After that the callers will be after your vote, not your money!
