NILE Rodgers and Chic certainly know how to put on a show, and they did exactly that at Haydock Park on Saturday.

The legendary producer, singer-songwriter and musician rolled back the years with a vintage performance in front of thousands of adoring fans.

And it was clear they were having the time of their life in the sunshine listening to some absolute classics from the past 50 years.

It is hard to believe that one man had a hand in such a medley of huge hits, and his talents were greeted with raucous cheering from the get-go.

An empty stage sprang into life as a stereo appeared on the big screen and began to play the famous Beatles track, Here Comes the Sun.

“Hello...anyone there?...I can’t hear you,” also appeared on the screen, as Deee-Lite's Groove is in the Heart and I Want You Back by the Jackson Five continued to whet the appetite of the crown.

The end of the tracks saw the stereo replaced with a tantalising countdown, which ended with the appearance of Rodgers along with current Chic lead vocalists Kimberly Davis and Folami.

After a magnificent reception from the thousands of racegoers packed around the stage, Rodgers introduced and performed the group’s first single, Dance Dance Dance.

More Chic classics followed with Everybody Dance and I Want Your Love, much to the delight of the crowd who were clapping, singing and grooving to every beat.

Through the amazing vocals of Davis and Folami, Rodgers ensured the party was rocking all through the evening with a mega-mix of his greatest collaborations.

I’m Coming Out and Inside Out by Diana Ross were flawlessly performed by the group as well as Sister Sledge’s 70s classics, Greatest Dancer and We Are Family.

Audience interaction was encouraged throughout the performance, with Rodgers praising the crowd as ‘reasonably intelligent people’ and Haydock as a real ‘party town’.

Even more massive anthems from the likes of Madonna, David Bowie and Carly Simon had the racegoers rocking before Rodgers spoke about his battle with cancer.

In a sombre moment with the crowd lighting up the sky with their phones, the music icon revealed how he is now cancer-free and performed a slow-paced soul version of Daft Punk’s Get Lucky.

Rodgers told the crowd how happy he was to be on stage in front of them and at 66 he certainly looked full of life and to be enjoying himself.

No Chic performance would be complete without singing their greatest hits, Le Freak and Good Times, which ensured the concert finished with a flourish.

The thousands in attendance gave Rodgers a fantastic ovation while shouting ‘more’ and were still singing as they made their way to the exit.
